Dear Data People,

Doing our bit for the planet

April 22nd saw a plethora of reminders to look after our planet as we acknowledged Earth Day.

However, It’s easy to look at conventional sources when considering CO2 emissions and just as easy to overlook the incredible impact our data footprint has.

Data centers and data transmission networks account for approximately 1–1.5% of global electricity use and about 1% of energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

A single data center can consume the equivalent electricity of 50,000 homes, and just a 1MW data centre uses 26 million litres of water yearly - as much as 237 households. Collectively, data centers devour more energy than some nation-states.

These insights underscore the significant environmental impact of data-related activities and, as data professionals we must proactively work to minimise carbon footprint and contribute to more sustainable digital practices.

Unused Data and Sustainability Concerns

AI enthusiasm is driving a surge in single-use data, most of which many organisations struggle to determine whether it’s worth keeping or not...

ComputerWeekly.com states “nearly one third (30.5%) find it difficult to identify what data to keep and what to dispose of because of the data’s potential use for AI projects in the future.”

The result, unfortunately, is often piles of unused data adding to storage costs and sustainability concerns. And while this may initially sound like a storage issue, we’re inclined to argue it’s not.

Data Quality isn’t a Technical Issue!

Data quality isn’t a technical issue - it’s a human one!

This report does a great job of highlighting why data problems often stem from behaviours and culture rather than technology alone. Human errors such as poor input, lack of accountability, and misaligned incentives can undermine even the most advanced data systems, and here’s why:

People create the data. If teams don’t understand its importance or aren’t trained to manage it correctly, errors multiply.
Decisions shape the data. Business rules, governance structures, and priorities determine how data is collected and maintained.
Culture sustains the data. When organisations treat data as an asset, quality becomes a shared responsibility rather than an IT afterthought.

Many Data analysts, listen up! If you want to be seen as more effective in your organisation, adopting great habits is the way to go.

Don Collins has created a helpful list with practical and clear actions for effective data analyst work.

We are especially taken by #12, because if no one understands your insights, do they even exist?  Too many great analyses get lost in translation because they’re buried in jargon or overly complex visuals.
