Welcome to our monthly newsletter - where we let you know what's been happening in the world of data, keep you in the loop with our latest blog releases, highlight our top news picks and share with you exclusive updates from the team at DAMA UK.

October can be quite dramatic: leaves tumbling, wind and rain upping their game, or unexpected gorgeous, mild, sunny afternoons. Nothing is predictable, and it seems to be the case for the world of data too, where change seems to be always lurking around the corner.

This month, of course, features AI - it’s hard to ignore, but we also ask how data quality stacks up against business importance, and how model capability may not be the bottleneck you think it is.

As always, we have lots of upcoming diary dates as well as exciting news about our own new learning series for members, which launches in November.

Data Quality vs Business Importance

How organisations balance technical data quality against business importance appears to be a prominent conversation in data leadership right now.

According to Jérôme Koller, examining this relationship surfaces several considerations:

🧠 It raises the point that quality depends on context. Data quality is rarely a single, static metric. Dimensions such as accuracy and completeness vary depending on the use case. Data that is suitable for high-level behavioural insights may not meet the standards required for financial reporting.
🧠 It suggests that importance is what guides investment. Attempting to clean every dataset across an organisation can be resource-intensive, so identifying business importance helps determine which quality dimensions really require attention, avoiding unnecessary remediation work on unused data.
🧠 It also indicates that strategy influences scope. So, rather than attempting to dismantle every data silo simultaneously, organisations frequently align their infrastructure priorities with overarching business goals to ensure capital is allocated effectively.

The role of synthetic data in analytics and AI development

Using synthetically generated data can be faster and more cost-effective than real enterprise data. However, there are concerns over bias and inaccuracies.”

No Jitter interviewed IDC Research Director Kathy Lange about the growing role of synthetic data in analytics and AI development.

While synthetic data offers a cost-effective way to address data scarcity and privacy regulations, the discussion highlights that it functions best as a complementary resource rather than a complete replacement for real-world data.

The most in-demand data product in your company is not a product at all.”
Dean Marti’s framing of the context layer is very good.

As AI tools transition from simple Q&A tools into autonomous agents executing complex workflows, the challenge is not so much model capability any more - it is the quality, structure, and freshness of the underlying organisational context.

Attempting to build a single knowledge warehouse to solve this will likely fail for the same reasons central data lakes struggled years ago. 👇
